Innovation
Quality and innovation, safety and reliability

Quality and innovation. Safety and reliability are and remain hallmarks of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. They shape the image of our company and they will be the guarantor of our success in future, too. In 2006, we introduced a range of innovations and quality improvements at our passenger airlines which will come fully to fruition in 2007:

Within our ongoing fleet renewal programme, we placed orders for further new aircraft. Those new planes – twenty Boeing 747-8 jetliners, thirty Airbus jets from the A320 family, five A330-33’s and seven A340-600’s are now going into service in the airline fleet.

In order to protect the climate, we are raising our efficiency and reducing emissions. We operate fuel-efficient aircraft and cooperate actively in the development of fuel-saving aero-engines. Saving fuel is one of our major business aims. And our progress in that direction is yielding gains: Our fleet burns an average of only 4.4 litres to transport one passenger 100 kilometres. In comparison: Fuel consumption in the Seventies averaged around 12 litres. And we are not standing still: Our new flagship, the A380, consumes a mere 3.3 litres.

By utilising modern technology – the Internet, cell phones and customer-operated terminals , we are making reservations and ticket sales very much easier and check-in altogether faster. Our passengers can check in on their own PC with the Homeprint Boarding Pass. On their arrival at the airport, they then simply deposit their baggage in every comfort at a Quick Drop luggage point.

We are revamping and installing new lounges at countless airports around the world over the next two years. All in all, we are investing about 100 million euros in new and renovated lounges.

At Berlin-Tegel Airport, we have opened a new Business-Class and a new Senator lounge. We are opening a new First-Class lounge at Munich Airport in late summer 2007. The new lounge has a total of 860 sqm of floor space spread over two levels and, like the First-Class terminal Frankfurt, it boasts a gourmet restaurant, a comfort and bar zone, working and rest rooms, a cigar lounge and its own bathroom and toilet facilities. Lounge facilities in Frankfurt are also being expanded. First-Class passengers and HON Circle members can look forward to enjoying the amenities of a new First-Class lounge in Gate B in spring 2008. The new Senator lounge in Dusseldorf was already completed last summer.

Further lounge projects are in the pipeline in New York and Paris.

Innovative, too, is Business Class on long-haul flights. Notable for its quality is the sophisticated seat which transforms at button touch into a flat two-metre bed.

Another new service is the free limousine transfer to and from the airport on Private Jet flights. On request, passengers are picked up at home and driven direct to their Private Jet flight at the airport. On landing, a limousine drives up alongside the plane to whisk them without delay to their destination.

Innovation and quality are also distinguishing features of the companies in the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa Cargo, for example, is firmly established as a premium provider of logistics services for airfreighting diverse types of air cargo. Lufthansa Technik is internationalising sales and production – and expanding business with customers outside the Lufthansa Group. Lufthansa Systems has evolved into a global full-service IT provider, and raised its competitiveness to an entirely new level. LSG Sky Chefs, with a market share of 30 per cent, is the world’s leading airline caterer. It was voted “ Caterer of the Year” for its ground-breaking concepts in the industry by the distinguished “Catering Inside” magazine.
