18.07.08 N3 Engine Overhaul Services, a Joint Venture of Lufthansa Technik AG and Rolls-Royce plc. for maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft engines received certification in DIN EN ISO 14001 from TÜV Thuringia. Its Chairman, Bernd Moser, today hands over the document. Herewith N3 has written proof of a successful implementation of an environmental management system. Wolfgang Kühnhold, CEO of N3 says: “We have already considered environmental protection while planning the operation of N3 and introduced a separate environmental policy. The environmental technologies used at N3 are a benchmark for the industry”.

Managing director Patrick W. Diemer commented that this award just showed how important the topic of environmental and climate protection for business travel had become, even on an international level. The winning solution, a centrally lodged travel management card offers cost transparency and a detailed calculation for the sustainability reporting. A further advantage is the saving of time and processing cost for the companies. Therefore it alleviates a big administrative hurdle companies are facing when taking steps to become involved in protecting the environment.

21.11.07 The European projects CARIBIC and MOZAIC are supported by Lufthansa and serve basic atmospheric research. For CARIBIC, a Lufthansa Airbus A340-600 was equipped with a measuring container weighing 1.6 tons. Two Lufthansa Airbus A340-300 aircraft continuously measure for the MOZAIC project the atmospheric content of ozone, water vapour, carbon monoxide and nitric oxides while in flight. Under the guidance of the Max Planck Institute, the "flying CARIBIC laboratory" helps scientists to understand complex processes related to climate change. The data generated by the MOZAIC project provides a basis for improving the accuracy of global climate models.

On 18th September, the Executive Board decided on the new Environmental Guidelines of Lufthansa Cargo.
18.09.07 On their signing by the four members of the Executive Board, the Environmental Guidelines officially came into force for Lufthansa Cargo. The Environmental Guidelines contain ecologically-oriented values, strategic overall targets as well as principles for action on which Lufthansa Cargo will orientate itself in the medium to long term. They include an obligation to compliance with all relevant legal provisions, to the continuous improvement of the environmental performance and to the prevention of environmental pollution. The Environmental Guidelines are part of the environmental management system and the starting signal for further environmentally relevant measures within the company.
