Environmental Sponsoring

Focus on protecting the crane
For many years, Lufthansa has supported the work of national and international environmental and nature conservation organizations. One area of emphasis here involves species protection activities such as projects to protect endangered crane species and their habitats. As a member of “Kranichschutz Deutschland”, the Crane Protection Germany working group, Lufthansa promotes measures to ensure safe breeding, staging and wintering areas for Eurasian cranes in Germany and also contributes towards international crane protection initiatives. Furthermore, the company supports the Crane Information Centre in Gross Mohrdorf in the Rügen-Bock region of Mecklenburg-Eastern Pomerania, which is run by the Crane Protection Germany organization. This region is one of the most important staging areas for cranes in Central Europe.

As a partner of the International Crane Foundation (ICF), Lufthansa also plays an active part in crane protection at an international level and, in addition, supports nature conservation projects in Spain and Israel via the European Nature Heritage Fund (EuroNatur). For several years, Lufthansa has supported the work of the South African Crane Working Group.

Lufthansa supports the crane-protection activities of these organizations with financial, logistical and communications resources:

Protecting the world’s freshwater lakes
Lufthansa is also committed to supporting the Living Lakes project, which was set up in 1998 by the Global Nature Fund (GNF). Today the project, which is committed to saving the earth’s major freshwater lakes, now encompasses 53 lake regions worldwide – from Lake Constance in Europe to Lake Poyang in China.

Replanting the rain forest
The rain forest renaturation program “Rainforestation Farming” aims at reforesting areas where clear-cutting has taken place. Lufthansa supports this project, which is guided by the environmental foundation NatureLife-International, in the Philippines, southwestern China and India.
The tarsier, whose body measures all of 16 cm, has become the symbol of the rain forest renewal project „Rainforestation Farming“.
