Environment
In light of growing demand for mobility, the aviation industry must respond to new environmental policy challenges, with the focus on further reducing greenhouse gas emissions, noise pollution, and energy consumption. At Lufthansa, striking a balance between economic interests and environmental responsibility remains the corporation’s guiding principle. This is well illustrated by the enormous sums the airline invests in a fuel-efficient fleet one of the best means of environmental protection.
In 2008, Lufthansa adopted new goals for environmental and climate protection. The program, which comprises 15 guidelines, is guided by the internationally accepted Four-Pillar Strategy for air transport, which includes the entire range of practicable measures for climate protection in aviation.
Four pillars for climate protection
| Technological progress | Improved infrastructure |
Operational measures |
Economic instruments |

![]() Thanks to innovative technology, the aviation industry has already succeeded in reducing specific fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 70 percent since 1970. If technical advances in aircraft skins, aerodynamics, materials, engines and electronics are promoted and implemented more widely, further significant reductions will be possible in future. |
![]() Infrastructure improvements on the ground and in the air are opening up substantial savings potential. Optimised use of the airspace and demand-driven expansion of airport infrastructure will provide the greatest opportunities. |
![]() These include the use of more efficient aircraft sizes, optimum flight routes and speed as well as improved ground processes. |
![]() Global emissions trading can be used to complement the other three pillars, which enjoy at least the same priority. As far as possible, these should be implemented globally for ecological reasons and to maintain fair competition so as not to place Europe’s aviation industry at a disadvantage. |
