Environmental goals and measures

Direct measures to increase the ecologic efficiency at the Lufthansa Group
Protecting the environment and conserving kerosene has a long tradition at Lufthansa. For many years, the aviation company has paid special attention – for economic and ecological reasons alike – to keeping fuel consumption and thus also CO2 emissions as low as possible. Not only a modern fleet is contributing to this but also many measures and ideas on the ground and in the air – just everything all around aviation - support us in this.

1 Measures – operations/cockpit:

Paperless cockpit/EFB

Worldwide flight planning system “Lido OC” by Lufthansa Systems calculates the optimum route for each flight and thus helps to conserve fuel

Flying at variable speeds

Improved use of winds and CDA

Flying on optimized routes

2 Measures – cabin

Optimization of cabin design under the aspects of weight and thus fuel savings:
Example A: weight reduction and thus cutback of specific fuel consumption by installing more lightweight seats
Example B: more lightweight ovens in the galleys

Avoiding/recycling of waste on board

Switching in-flight magazines and briefing documents to recycling paper

3 Measures – freight

Optimized loading

Weight reductions in loading equipment and devices

4 Optimized utilization of aircraft capacities
(seat-load factor/payload factor)

Deployment of suitable aircraft (adapting to actual booking situation), leading to optimized utilization and improvement of specific fuel consumption

5 Support for climate research

For this, Lufthansa A340-300s were equipped with sensors and one Lufthansa A340-600 was equipped with a measurement container; under the guidance of the Max Planck Institute, this “flying laboratory” helps to clarify complex processes in climatic change

6 Technological progress

Operation of modern, more efficient and simultaneously more low-noise engines (e.g. A330, A340-600, soon A380 and B 747-8)

7 Measures – maintenance

Innovative engine cleaning to increase efficiency of engine performance; further optimization of the process

8 Measures – operations/loading

Optimized freshwater supplies

Optimization of fuel quantities

Optimization of the center of gravity in flight by pumping kerosene between fuel tanks, thus less drag
