Excellent environmental protection: Lufthansa buildings set standards

Protecting the environment is traditional at Lufthansa. A part of corporate culture, it is a declared aim in corporate policy. That tradition is evidenced not only by Lufthansa investments in a modern, environmental-friendly fleet, but also by the standards set by company buildings. In recognition of those standards, the EU has granted “GreenBuilding” status to the Lufthansa Aviation Center (LAC) in Frankfurt in appreciation of its energy efficiency. The LAC complex has earned that award not only for the numerous gardens in the complex, which serve as the lungs of the building, contributing to temperature regulation and air conditioning. Cutting-edge technology and highly effective heat insulation reduce the LAC’s consumption of heating energy by about 60 per cent below that of conventional buildings. And that, in turn, reduces CO2 emissions in the Rhine-Main region by 12,000 tonnes annually.

Sustainable construction and operational efficiency are also key attributes of the brand new Lufthansa Training & Conference Center Seeheim. Located on the picturesque Bergstrasse, the new Center excels in heat insulation and is equipped with rainwater storage tanks to irrigate the lawns and gardens. But its most innovative accoutrement lies hidden, sunk deep down in the earth. A geothermal energy system supplies the advanced training institute for Lufthansa staff from around the world with energy sourced from well below the earth’s surface. Saving resources and protecting the environment.

Stefan Lauer, Executive Board Deutsche Lufthansa AG, Human Ressources

"The gardens are the lungs of the building, through which it breathes. They, simultaneously, represent the climate zones of our earth and symbolise the internationality and cosmopolitan outlook of the Lufthansa Group."

  • GreenBuilding Programme

The GreenBuilding Programme (GBP) addresses owners of non-residential buildings in the EU by providing information to increase their awareness of cost-effective measures to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. Through PR and media communications, it documents the efficacy of such measures to encourage building owners to tap a large reservoir of profitable investments in energy efficiency in order to realise savings and increase the value of their property.
